A Syrian national who grew up in Damascus before arriving in Australia in 2014, Al-Akul is\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/mar\/30\/syrian-refugee-number-passes-5m-mark-un-reveals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">one of the 5.1 million people who have fled Syria\u2019s civil war as refugees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For many, the national side\u2019s unlikely progression to the playoffs for 2018 World Cup qualification is less a fairytale and more a continuation of the nightmare that has seen more than 400,000 people killed since the Syrian uprising began in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can I support this team when so many civilians have been killed in\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/syria\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Syria<\/a>,\u201d Al-Akul said on Tuesday. \u201cHow can I when too many athletes have been arrested and some of them killed by the regime because they supported the Syrian revolution.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-3 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2017\/oct\/05\/football-this-is-not-assads-team-its-syrias-team\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">But like the country itself, feelings about the Syrian national team<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 who could end the Socceroos\u2019 World Cup qualification hopes tonight \u2013 are complex and divided.<\/p>\n<p>When Syria secured their two-legged playoff against Australia with a dramatic\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2017\/sep\/05\/syria-world-cup-play-off-australia-iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">late equaliser<\/a>against Iran last month, it prompted\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2017\/sep\/05\/syria-world-cup-play-off-australia-iran\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">celebrations in the streets of Damascus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The result seemed so unlikely for a team ranked 75th in the world from a country ravaged by civil war, that many, like George Salloum from Granville in Sydney\u2019s west, saw it as a rare reprieve from all the \u201cbad news\u201d the country his family migrated from faces.<\/p>\n<p>Salloum was born in\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/australia\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Australia<\/a>, but many of his family still live in Zweitina, a Greek Orthodox Christian village near Homs in the country\u2019s west.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good for Syria \u2013 with what\u2019s happening there you\u2019d think there would be no soccer team,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople think the whole country is in ruins, but it\u2019s showing the world we\u2019re still up there and thriving. The country is still up and running, and people are so proud of Syria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But is Syria an example of triumph over adversity, or a cynical propaganda display from a despot?<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-3 | 2\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-feature--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>After the Iran match, in an eerie demonstration of the cult of personality that surrounds the Assad regime, the players assembled on Syrian television to praise the dictator.<\/p>\n<p>Among them were Firas al-Khatib and Omar al Somah, two players who before the Iran match had not played for Syria since 2012 in a boycott of the regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, we thank president Bashar al-Assad for honouring all the players,\u201d al-Khatib said in a broadcast translated to English on Youtube. Al Somah mimicked him: \u201cI thank president Bashar al-Assad for his support of sports and athletes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Anas Ammo, a Syrian sports writer who has lived in Turkey for the past five years after fleeing the civil war, said the staged press conference was a display of how the national side has been co-opted by Assad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the people in Syria love football, and six years ago we would be celebrating,\u201d he said. \u201cBut this team \u2013 this is not a football team \u2013 this is a political team. This is a dictator\u2019s team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ammos, who says he\u2019ll be supporting Australia, said the reasons for the player\u2019s support for the national team were also varied and complex.<\/p>\n<p>Some genuinely support Assad, while he believed others, such as al-Khatib, faced political pressure.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-3 | 3\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-feature--item \">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\">In May, the journalist Steve Fainaru interviewed al-Khatib as part of a piece on the national side, documenting the player\u2019s anguish over his decision to rejoin the fold.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhatever happens, 12 million Syrians will love me,\u201d he told Fainaru. \u201cAnother 12 million will want\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/espn\/feature\/story\/_\/id\/19343630\/how-syrian-government-brought-soccer-campaign-oppression\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">to kill me<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like many, al-Akul, who now lives in western Sydney, believes Assad is using the national team to project an image of normality to the international community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t care about football or sport before this \u2013 in Syria we had bad teams, bad funding, now all of a sudden he supports all of that?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants the propaganda to show the world \u2018look, after seven years of war we don\u2019t care, we go to the World Cup qualifier\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s certainly true that the regime\u2019s support for its athletes is newly found. Ammos believes at least 13 league football players are missing or in government detention. Almost 50 have been killed by government forces. And many have come up against the regime since the 2011 uprisings.<\/p>\n<p>This week the website of the Asian Football Confederation published an interview with Syria\u2019s most capped player, goalkeeper Mosab Balhous, on the country\u2019s unexpected success.<\/p>\n<p>Balhous, 34 and now based in Omar as a coach for Dhofar, predicted the team would beat Australia on the back of the \u201cspirit, desire and determination of the players\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also expressed regret that he wouldn\u2019t be there, telling the website that it was\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.the-afc.com\/2018-fifa-world-cup\/we-can-go-to-the-next-round-says-former-syria-star-mosab-balhous\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201can honour for any player to represent his country\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What it didn\u2019t mention was that Balhous was arrested by government forces in 2011 on charges of supporting opposition movements and sheltering rebel fighters, and\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/37987486\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">vanished for a year before suddenly rejoining the national squad in 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element-rich-link--tag element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link-tag\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-tag\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\">Others have been killed or are missing. Ahmad Hesham Swedan, a 26-year-old who played with Syrian Premier League teams al-Karama and al-Wahda was killed by shelling in Homs in 2012.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/syrian-football-star-tortured-to-death-in-assad-prison-0bhh6s6x0\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jihad Qassab<\/a>, a former Syria captain who led his club al-Karama to the 2006 Asian Champions League final, died inside Saidnaya military prison in Damascus in late 2016 after being accused by authorities of making car bombs, an allegation he denied.<\/p>\n<p>A second person named George Salloum, this one from Avondale Heights in Melbourne\u2019s north-west, has been watching Syria\u2019s matches on television.<\/p>\n<p>Salloum moved to Australia from Syria 45 years ago as a 19-year-old. Usually he\u2019d be supporting Australia, but he says the sentimental pull of Syria is too great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should be supporting Australia because I have been here all my life [but] it\u2019s human nature, you always have a soft place in your heart for the place that you\u2019re from,\u201d he said. \u201cPlus, Syria are the underdogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, Salloum said, he understood why many didn\u2019t feel able to support Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat has happened is a catastrophe in any way you want to measure it, cities and villages have been destroyed and people have been killed on both sides,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hatred and division is so profound it will take generations and generations to heal it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any grudge against anybody.\u201d&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[This article was originally published by\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2017\/oct\/10\/how-can-i-support-this-team-divided-loyalties-for-syrians-haunted-by-civil-war?CMP=share_btn_tw\">The Guardian<\/a>.]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Like the country itself, feelings about Syria\u2019s national football team, who play Australia tonight, are complex.
